Stocks Cafe came into existence thanks to the forethought of local farmer Bill Barratt who bought what was then a derelict listed building which included a closed butchers shop.
After 18 months of renovation and remodelling the butchers shop became ‘Ye Old Stocks Cafe’ and was opened in July 1979 giving the area a much needed traditional cafe.
Bill had commissioned a local art student, Claire Taylor (19), to paint a mural on the glazed wall tiles of the butchers shop. It depicts Chapel-en-le-Frith market in 1897 and this now famous mural is still there today engendering discussion by all who visit the cafe.
Note: Claire returns every now and then to carry out repair work to the mural.
Set up to cater primarily for locals and visitors alike, Stocks Cafe has over the years carved a name for itself in providing good food at sensible prices.
Since 1979 there has been a succession of owners of Stocks Cafe and Jan and Spencer and the team are taking great pride in maintaining, and indeed improving, the quality and taste of the food on offer.
